The way to determine if you have a sex addiction problem is if your sexual behavior is causing damage in certain areas of your life, including your relationships, your career, or your emotional, physical and spiritual well-being. The 2 main signs of an addiction are loss of control and negative consequences due to the behavior. In other words, if you are unable to control your sexual behavior and you’re having negative consequences because of the behavior you probably have a problem and should seek help for yourself. Working to clear up sexual problem areas will provide great benefits. People we work with are usually able to stop or greatly curtail the problematic sexual behavior and often end up experiencing more intimacy and sexual satisfaction with their partner and making more $ in their career.
We are a group of Psychotherapists offering counseling and psychotherapy to individuals, couples and families struggling with sexual addiction / compulsion issues, and related relationship issues. We have office locations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area – San Francisco, Berkeley, Oakland (East Bay), Marin County (North Bay), Palo Alto, Los Altos, Menlo Park (South Bay), and Concord & Pleasant Hill, California.
We are the leading Experts in Sexual Addiction Treatment in the Bay Area having extensive experience and advanced training working with sexually compulsive behaviors. Each practitioner on this site has 15 – 30 years experience specializing in this work and most of us have done our own personal recovery with this issue so we know it inside and out. We know how to work with you to design a treatment program tailored to your needs so that you can effectively stop the behavior as soon as possible that is damaging your life. In addition we work on the deeper levels to get at the root cause of the addiction so it doesn’t re-surface later. Many sex addiction counselors do not know how to work at both levels – many only work on the surface level of the addiction and do not know how to do the deeper work that is essential so that the addiction does not resurface – we are specialists in both these areas.
We are providers of various insurance plans and offer day, evening, and sometimes Saturday appointments. Please consult the Therapist Directory to find the therapist who fits your needs. All phone calls and emails are completely confidential. Please feel free to call or email any of us as we are happy to answer any questions you might have about treatment.
There is plenty of hope for you if you make the commitment to do the work it takes to recover from sex addiction. Beginning the work and sticking with it until you are well on your path of recovery are big indicators of success with the people we have worked with. The biggest mistake that you can make is not beginning the work when you realize it is a problem (postponing it – often until a major crisis happens), or quiting the work too soon. All of the therapists on this site have seen people who have told us they wish they had entered in recovery work years ago – either when their partner first found out about it or when some other crisis happened, or simply when they realized it was a problem and they needed help to stop the behavior. If there is one piece of advice we would give you it is to not delay getting help any longer – even if its only buying a book on the subject, or trying out a 12-step meeting… then the next most important thing is to continue with what you’ve started so you don’t slip backwards.
There are many other resources (links at the top) on this site besides therapy: 12-step groups for sexual addiction (in-person meetings, web meetings and phone meetings), books, recovery sites, pornography blocking software sites, and email groups. There are also a number of articles on sexual addiction and complusion written by therapists from this site.
