Some people have a sex addiction because of childhood sexual abuse. The sex addiction is usually about an out of controlness (one’s power and control was taken over during the abuse) that is in their sexuality due to the sex abuse trauma. The sexual abuse traumatized the person’s sexuality and the sex addiction shows as one of the main symptoms of this trauma.
For many of these people, direct trauma resolution work on the sex abuse will resolve the sex addiction. For people I work with now with this injury, trauma resolution work on the sexual abuse can be done in just a few sessions with fast results. Usually more sessions are needed to help stabilize the trauma work, but the initial work on the sexual trauma usually makes a big difference in the sex addiction and this progress continues very well as therapy focuses on getting one’s life back together and on track. Techniques like Trauma Incident Reduction, EMDR or Somatic Experiencing are usually effective to resolve this trauma. These tools are being learned by more and more therapists and therapy that used to take years for sexual abuse and now be done in much less time.
